Lee Roy Selmon's tale combines the football scholarship of his parents and a commitment to his community. One of the first things he did is to help his relatives. Lucious Selmon was the father of Jessie Selmon. The family raised nine kids in a Eufala farm. He was also one of three siblings who represented Oklahoma in football. All three became All-America. Lucious Jr. Dewey, Lee Roy, and Lucious Jr. Dewey started the 1973 season. Lee Roy has won both the Outland Award as well as the Lombardi Award for being the nation's best lineman. In his three years as the team's starter, Oklahoma was 32-1-1 and also won two championships at the national level. In 1975, the National Football Foundation named him a Scholar-Athlete for the third time in the year 1975. Selmon obtained his master's degree in educational studies. Lee Roy's fourth volunteer service included ten hours per week in volunteer work during the college. He settled down in Tampa following college. He played with the Buccaneers for nine years and made three times all-pro. His business career began. By 1988 he had become an Account Relation Officer at Tampa's First Florida Bank and worked in these organizations: Special Olympics Easter Seals Baptist Church Ronald McDonald House United Negro College Fund South Florida Institute as a member of the Black Life Hall of Fame Bowl Committee. In 1982, the Junior Chamber of Commerce recognized Lee Roy as being among 10 of the most notable young men. Lee Roy, a 6-2-inch higher and weighing in at the hefty 256 pounds at college when he was a player, captained his team for the year 1975. He was promoted to the assistant director of Athletics at the University of South Florida. In 1988, he was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He also made the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame as well as the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Oklahoma City Chapter National Football Foundation awarded the Distinguished American Award for 1989 to Lucious Selmon Sr. Henry Bellmon is the Oklahoma governor, who presented this award.
