Rufus is another band she has joined. Khan was raised as a Catholic. She studied at the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church's primary school. Her grandmother began to introduce her music while she was an infant. Khan was an avid blues and rhythm fan in her preteen years. At eleven she was a member of the Crystalettes along with her sister Taka. in the 1960s, Khan participated in several civil rights rallies with her father's second wife Connie a strong supporter of the movement and became a member of the Black Panther Party after befriending one of the members and activist Chicago native Fred Hampton in 1967. Many have believed that Chaka was her nickname when she joined the Panthers. Khan clarified she was the Yoruba Baba had given her the first name she was given, Chaka Adunne Aduffe. In 1969 she left the Panthers and left high school, having previously attended Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She started performing in small groups around the Chicago region, first in Cash McCall's band Lyfe that included her boyfriend at the time, Hassan Khan. Chaka got married to Hassan in 1970.
